Kalikangiari (The goblins) – Field
A silkscreen print by Hambis Tsangaris from his Kallikantzaroi series, inspired by the rich folklore surrounding these mischievous supernatural beings in Cypriot tradition.
Against a violet landscape, dark silhouetted figures emerge among trees, stone walls and the rugged countryside. Hambis’s bold, almost theatrical use of black against colour gives the scene an atmosphere that is both playful and mysterious, reflecting the strange world inhabited by the kallikantzaroi in Cypriot folk imagination.
The work is connected to Hambis’s extensive research into Cypriot traditions surrounding the kallikantzaroi, which resulted in his books Οι Καλικάντζαροι τζαι το Παιξίμιν and Καλικάντζαροι – Κυπριακές Ιστορίες. Through both his writing and his prints, Hambis preserves a vivid part of Cyprus’s oral and visual folk culture.
