Spanos and the Forty Dragons
Spanos and the Forty Dragons is one of Cyprus’s best-known traditional folk tales, illustrated by Hambis Tsangaris through his distinctive printmaking language. The story follows Spanos — “the beardless one” — as he confronts forty dragons who control the water, transforming a traditional tale of courage and ingenuity into a broader story about resistance, justice and the struggle for the land’s vital resources.
Hambis first illustrated the tale in 1986 and returned to it in successive editions, developing a rich visual world rooted in Cypriot popular tradition and mythology. The edition shown here presents the story in Cypriot dialect together with translations into Greek, English, French and Russian.
