The art of lithography, which emerged at the end of the 18th century as the third printmaking technique—after woodcut and engraving—is presented in a new exhibition at the Hambis Printmaking Museum in Platanisteia.
The exhibition, titled “Lithography and Its Evolution”, curated by Hélène Reeb, initially presents lithographs printed from a single stone (19th–21st century), both monochrome and hand-colored using stencil or brush techniques.
These are followed by the first color lithographs—two-color prints—produced during the second quarter of the 19th century, and subsequently by multicolored lithographs, commonly known as chromolithographs.
From the 19th century onward, many lithographic workshops replaced the bulky and costly lithographic stones with thin sheets of zinc or aluminum. The exhibition at the Hambis Printmaking Museum includes a fine collection of zinc lithographs. Photolithographs and offset lithographs are also presented, as well as monotypes.
Important works by artists from many countries are exhibited, including Eugène Delacroix, Honoré Daumier, François Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Dimitrios Galanis, Hap Grieshaber, Alekos Fassianos, Panayiotis Tetsis, and Dimitris Alithinos.
